Janet's Foss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Janet's Foss

Janet's Foss is a small waterfall near the British town of Malham , North Yorkshire .

The Gordale Beck stream , a tributary of the Aire , flows through the waterfall into a larger basin. In the past, sheep were washed in this basin before shearing at the end of June in order to clean the wool and stimulate growth. In addition, the small rock plateau by the waterfall was used for parties.

The name Janet (sometimes also: Jennet ) refers to a fairy queen who, according to popular belief, lived nearby. Foss is a Nordic word for "waterfall" that is still used in Scandinavia and has the form force in other English waterfalls .
