Janet Barlow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Janet F. Barlow is a British meteorologist . She is Professor of Environmental Physics at Reading University .

Life

Barlow acquired in 1990 at the then University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology a bachelor's degree in applied physics and German, and in 1994 at the University of Reading a master's degree in applied and agricultural meteorology. She did her doctorate there in 1996 at the Institute for Meteorology. There she subsequently took on numerous scientific roles.

Act

Barlow's work deals with the field of urban climatology . In the context of the debate about the climate crisis, she points to the emergence of inner-city “heat islands” due to the overheating of the earth's climate system . She once said: “In London it can sometimes be up to 9 ° C warmer than in the country. In the UK, many of our buildings were built for the Victorian climate and they won't even withstand today's heat waves, let alone tomorrow's climate change. "

Barlow won the Luke Howard Award in 2019 for her outstanding contributions to urban climatology. The reason given was: “Through her deep theoretical understanding, Barlow has made important contributions to urban meteorology over the past 20 years. She has conducted innovative research of exceptional quality and written numerous groundbreaking and influential publications on a wide range of subjects. "
