Janet Howell

Janet Denison Howell (born May 7, 1944 in Washington, DC as Janet Denison ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). She has been a Senator in the Virginia Senate since 1992, representing the 32nd District.

Life

Janet Howell was born in Washington, DC in 1944 to the economist Edward F. Denison . She attended Oberlin College , where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 . She then continued her studies at the University of Pennsylvania , graduating in 1968 with a Master of Arts (MA). Howell was a teacher at a publicly owned school and later worked as a legislative assistant .

She was first elected to the Virginia Senate in 1991. She was able to defend her mandate in the subsequent elections. As a senator, she was a member of various committees, including the first woman on the Senate Finance Committee . She was also the first woman and second non-lawyer on the Courts of Justice Committee .

Howell has been married since 1966 and has two sons.
