With the Janusz Korczak medal once in honor Eifel and Voreifel -based Jews since 1984 people who have made the "Christian-Jewish and German-Israeli reconciliation" deserves. It is awarded at irregular intervals to people who “have made particular efforts to come to terms with the recent past”. Especially the members of the Jewish "Association of Former Cologne and Rhinelander" in Haifa / Israel , who come from the Eifel, initiated this award, which consists of a 6 cm medal in a welded glass frame. On the front it shows the portrait of the Polish doctor and educator Janusz Korczak , who perished in the Holocaust in 1942 . This motif is intended to address the educational commitment of historians and teachers researching in the German Rhineland .

In contrast to the literary Janusz Korczak Prize, the prize is not associated with any financial endowment, but honors the performance of the committed personality in the form of a public celebration. In 1982 the medal was given to the writer Mirjam Pressler for her book When happiness comes, you have to put a chair in front of him. In June 1984 the medal was awarded to the senior teacher from Euskirchen, Hans-Dieter Arntz , during a “reunion celebration with Jews who were formerly at home in Flamersheim”.
