Duke Janusz of Mazovia

Janusz of Masovia (Polish Janusz III Mazowiecki ; * 1502 ; † March 10, 1526 ) was from 1503, as Janusz III , next to his brother Stanislaus († 1524), Duke of Masovia (until 1518 under the reign of his mother) and sole ruler from 1524. He came from the aristocratic family of Mazovian Piasts , of which he was the last male representative.

Life

Janusz was the son of Duke Konrad III. († 1503) and the Lithuanian noblewoman Anna Radziwiłł († 1522). When his father died in 1503, Janusz and his brother Stanislaus inherited areas around Czersk and, with the support of King Alexander, also the ducal throne of Mazovia, but due to the young age the reign was handed over to Konrad's widow, Duchess Anna.

In 1518 both brothers attended the wedding of King Sigismund to the Italian princess Bona Sforza . As loyal vassals of the Polish crown , Janusz and his brother took part in the 1519–1521 equestrian war against the Teutonic Order .

In 1518 he and his brother formally took over the reign of the duchy from his mother. They shared the reign until the death of Stanislaus in 1524. However, Janusz only survived his brother by two years and died in 1526.

With him the line of the Mazovian Piasts died out in the male line and the Duchy of Mazovia was drawn in as a settled fiefdom by the Polish crown.

marriage and family

Duke Janusz was never married and died childless. He found his final resting place in St. John's Cathedral in Warsaw.
