Jardim Botânico de Brasília
Under the name Jardim Botânico de Brasília , an original 4,518 hectare piece of cerrado 15 km southeast of the Brazilian capital Brasília was placed under protection as the city's botanical garden .
Of this, 526 hectares are open to the public. The rest of the reserve is used for research and conservation of the Cerrado biome . Access is from the Jardim Botânico settlement of the same name (SMDB Conj. 12, accessible from QI23 Lago Sul), the center of the park can be reached by car via the paved so-called Mother Trail .
1,300 species of plants, 89 species of mammals , 63 species of amphibians and reptiles , 270 species of birds and around 500 species of butterflies have been identified in the area. The reserve is part of the UNESCO- established Wild Life Area of the Cerrado Biosphere Reserve . The area also serves as a water protection area for the Cabeca de Veado , which rises here and supplies the town of Lago Sul.
The 3.5 km long Trilha Ecológica hiking trail leads through different types of cerrado: river bank forest ( Mata Ciliar ), gallery forest ( Mata de Galeria ), dry forest ( Mata seca ), savanna forest ( Cerradão ), Cerrado Denso, Cerrado Típica, grassland ( Campo Sujo) and Campo Limpo ) and Palmwald ( Vereda ).
However, plants from other regions that are not typical of the area, as is common in botanical gardens, are not found. The infrastructure includes a. a café and a picnic area. There is also a small area with a pond, modeled on a Japanese garden , a so-called evolution garden , a meditation garden and an observation tower (as of December 2014: under construction).
