The Jardim Tunduru is a large, 64,000 square meter park in the center of the Mozambican capital Maputo . Opened in the 19th century under the name Jardim Municipal Vasco da Gama , the park is one of the largest of its kind in the country.

history

In 1885, the “Society for Tree and Plant Culture” ( Sociedade Arboricultura e Floricultura ) was founded in the then named city of Lourenço Marques , with the aim of building a park in the city. After numerous discussions with the governor of the colony, she was allowed to build a thirteen hectare facility west of the Ponta Vermelha. In 1887 a large part of the complex was already planted.

The park became more and more popular, so in 1897 it was given a fence and a large gate. On the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's death in 1924, the city commandant Victor Hugo de Azeredo Coutinho had a Manueline- style entrance gate built for the park.

In the course of Mozambique's independence, the park was given its new name in 1975, Jardim Tunduru , named after the Tanzanian district of Tunduru , where, among other things, resistance fighters of the FRELIMO were trained.

In the course of the following decades the park received no further maintenance, so that its condition was deplorable according to media reports. A renovation of the park was announced in 2012, but the announcement was not followed by any action. The mayor of Maputo, David Simango , announced the renovation of the park within one year only for the local elections in 2013 . Construction began in November 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2014. The costs are estimated at 165 million Meticais (about 3.8 million euros), the financing is provided by the City of Maputo, CFM , the foundation of the mining company Vale (Fundação Vale) and the Instituto Nacional do Turismo.
