The Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa , founded in 1883 and opened in 1884 , [ʒɐrdɪ̃ zowlɘʒiku də li'ʒboɐ] , Lisbon's zoological garden , is one of the largest zoos in Portugal . Located in the São Domingos de Benfica district , the zoological garden was the first park of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula . In the beginning he benefited from the relationships with the Portuguese colonies and was able to build up one of the most important and varied animal populations of his time within a few years.

Opened in 1955, Dolphin Bay is one of the zoo's greatest attractions. The demonstrations there take place against the backdrop of a fishing village and combine the acrobatics of dolphins and sea lions with information about the characteristics of these animals and their adaptation to marine life.

Another attraction is the cable car, inaugurated in 1994. In open cabin baskets, standing visitors can experience a unique view of the entire complex on a 20-minute drive across the zoo.

The zoo has over 2000 animals of 332 different species, including 114 mammals, 157 birds, 56 reptiles and five amphibians, as well as a small collection of arthropods.
