"La Foltière" castle

The Jardin botanique de Haute-Bretagne (botanical garden of Haute-Bretagne, formerly known as the Haute-Bretagne flower garden) is located in Brittany (France), about 10 kilometers north of the beautiful town of Fougères . It is privately owned but remains open to the public. Its area is 25 hectares. In the middle of this garden is the castle “La Foltière”, which was built in 1847.

location

The Jardin botanique de Haute-Bretagne is located in the village of Le Châtellier, about 10 kilometers north of the city of Fougères , between Rennes and Mont-Saint-Michel .

history

The “La Foltière” estate was bought in 1820 by the Frontin des Buffards family. Around 1840 this family decided to build the present castle and create a romantic English garden. The old mansion, which was the headquarters of the “Chouans” leader Comte Joseph de Puisaye at the time of the French Revolution , was demolished.

In the twentieth century the palace and garden were long abandoned. In 1994 the estate was bought by Alain Jouno. He started redesigning the garden in 1995 and creating 16 poetically inspired gardens. Since then, 8 more gardens have been designed.

The gardens

The design of the gardens was shaped by poetic, mythological or historical influences. Every garden has its own style and exudes its own mood.

The garden of the morning sun

The gardens can be divided into three groups:

  • The historically or mythologically inspired gardens:
    • the avenue of white roses
    • the garden from a thousand and one nights
    • the ancient city
    • Knossos
    • the bamboo grove
    • the secret garden
    • the avenue of old roses
    • the garden of Dionysus
    • the garden of Olympus
    • the Robinson Labyrinth
    • the prehistoric garden
  • The romantic gardens:
    • the garden of the morning sun
    • the little forest
    • the garden of exotic perfumes
    • the blue spring
    • the cave of carnivorous plants
    • the garden of the four seasons
    • the avenue of modern roses
  • The Twilight Gardens:
    • the evening garden
    • the garden of starry nights
    • the garden of a summer night daydream
    • the garden of the red moon
    • the garden of the evening sky
    • the garden of the old oak

Several gardens are dedicated to children (the Robinson Labyrinth, the prehistoric garden, etc.).

Plant species

The Jardin botanique de Haute-Bretagne offers thousands of plant species. He has a large collection of plants that require acidic soil ( rhododendrons , laurel roses , magnolias , hydrangeas ??). In March, the camellias and magnolias ( Magnolias campbellii etc.) bloom . Then, in April and May, the azaleas and rhododendrons bloom.

Accessibility for the disabled

The gardens offer easy access for wheelchair users. The French administration has awarded the Jardin botanique de Haute-Bretagne the “Tourisme & Handicap” quality mark (i.e. tourism and handicap).
