Monument to San Juan de Dios, Jardines del Triunfo

The Jardines del Triunfo (sometimes also called Plaz del Triunfo ) in Granada is a monumentally designed, central square with a large water feature and a column statue of the Immaculate Virgin that can be seen from afar. It is used for recreation and as a junction for various bus routes is also of importance in terms of transport.

history

At the gates of Moorish Granada, outside the Puerta de Elvira, there was a cemetery until the city was handed over to the Catholic Monarchs; in the course of the expansion of the city, churches, various stately buildings and a bullring were built nearby; the free space in front of the old city gate has long been used for folk festivals. After the city was conquered by Napoleon's troops, executions were carried out in this area; even after the end of the occupation this benefit was retained. The freedom fighter Mariana de Pineda Muñoz was murdered here along with other people in 1831 . In 1856 a garden with a fountain was set up on the site. The current facility dates from the 1960s and was set up on the site of the old bullring; the statue of the Immaculate Conception was moved from the Puerta de Elvira to this square.

Behind the 75 meter long fountain and the columned statue of the Immaculate Virgin by Alonso de Mena is the Hospital Real, now part of the University of Granada. In the Jardines itself there is also a monument to San Juan de Dios, created by Miguel Moreno Romera. The Capuchin convent with church and the crypt of Fray Leopoldo are directly adjacent . The Puerta de Elvira is also in the immediate vicinity; the historic Plaza del Triunfo is right in front of this former city gate.
