Live and act
Mariana de Pineda Muñoz was born to Maria de los Dolores Muñoz y Bueno and Mariano de Pineda y Ramírez, a nobleman born in Guatemala in 1754. At the age of 15 she married the liberal army officer Manuel Peralta y Valle. In 1822 she was widowed with two children. Her husband's influence remained and she devoted herself to the struggle for freedom. Under Fernando VII it was under constant state control. After a failed attempt to introduce a constitutional system, Mariana de Pineda was surprised while embroidering a flag for the insurgents. She was arrested and sentenced to death . She never revealed her accomplices during the interrogations and remained steadfast. She was sentenced to execution and garrotted .
First buried in a cemetery near the place of execution, her remains were transferred to the crypt of Granada Cathedral in 1856 .
Today, at the place of her execution, the Plaza de la Libertad, there is a monument to Mariana Pineda, whose name is also given to a central square in Granada.
Federico García Lorca used her story as a template for his play Mariana Pineda, which premiered in 1927 . May 26th is celebrated in Granada as a day of remembrance in her honor.
