Jastreb (spacesuit)
Jastreb ( Russian Ястреб for hawk ) is the name of a Soviet space suit that was specially developed by NPP Zvezda for the Soviet lunar landing program and early Soyuz missions. This model allows the space exit from the orbital module of the Soyuz spaceship.
The design and development of the suit began in 1966 at NPP Zvezda with the support of cosmonaut Alexei Leonov . Leonov had used the Berkut suit during the first outboard activity on the flight from Vozhod 2 and had considerable problems with it. The spacesuit inflated more than expected in space, making movement and return to the spaceship almost impossible. The new model was much stiffer and used a rope-roller-joint system. Large metal rings around the nylon undersuit served as anchors for the upper joints. The suit had a regenerative life support system in a white metal box attached to the suit's stomach to allow movement in the suit. It took two spacemen to get dressed.
The Yastreb spacesuit was only used once in space when Yevgeny Khrunov and Alexei Yelisseyev transferred from Soyuz 5 to Soyuz 4 in 1969. The Orlan spacesuit was used during the next Soviet space exit in 1977 .
