The Java slow loris ( Nycticebus javanicus ) is a wet-nosed primate from the genus slow loris ( Nycticebus ), which occurs on the Indonesian island of Java . The species was originally listed as a subspecies of the Sunda slow loris ( Nycticebus coucang ), but is increasingly viewed as a separate species in more recent publications.
features
The Java slow loris reaches an average head-trunk length of 25 cm, with a weight of 750–1150 g and its body shape is similar to all other slow loris. It grows a little larger than other Sundanese slow lorikeets. The head becomes 5.9 cm long (± 0.74 cm) and 4.3 cm wide (± 0.45 cm), the ears 1.68 cm high (± 0.26 cm). The latter are therefore smaller compared to other Sundanese slow loris. The tail length is 1.63 to 2.45 cm. The fur of the Java slow loris is brown to reddish. The hair is short and woolly, the ears have small tufts of long, silky hair. A dark line of eel, bordered in white on the sides, runs along the middle of the back and merges into the face mask typical of plum loris on the head. The neck and the regions of the face not patterned by the face mask are white. The dark spots on the ears extend to the cheeks.
Way of life
The Java slow lorikeet is a nocturnal tree dweller and is at home in both primary and secondary forests at heights of up to 1,600 meters. It feeds on sap, flowers and insects.
Danger
The Java slow lorikeet is listed in the IUCN's Red List of Endangered Species as critically endangered. The main threat to the species is habitat destruction through deforestation and trapping for domestic purposes.
The species is no longer kept in Europe. Former owners are Decin, London and The Hague, the first German keeping is still pending.
