Jay McLean

Jay McLean (* 1890 in San Francisco ; † 1957 ) was a doctor and co-discoverer of heparin .

Live and act

McLean was born to a doctor and began studying medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore . In 1916, in his sophomore year of medicine, he worked with physiologist William Henry Howell . There he mainly examined blood coagulation in connection with phospholipids . McLean should initially only work with the phospholipid kephalin , above all he should ensure clean isolation from the brain tissue of dogs and ensure the chemical purity of the kephalin.

In addition, however, he also worked on the isolation of phosphatides from the liver. The discovery of the coagulation inhibitor heparin resulted from this work .
