Jazz Institute of Chicago

The Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC) has existed since 1969 to promote jazz in all its forms in Chicago , one of the classic homeland of jazz.

It is significantly involved in the organization of the Chicago Jazz Festival (from 1979) and also organizes other concert series, such as an annual club tour , jam sessions in the Chicago Cultural Center and the Millennium Park (in Millennium Park ), JazzFair (from 1979) and JazzCity festivals (from 1997, concerts all over the city in collaboration with the Chicago Park District). One focus is the promotion of young talent and training ( Jazz Links Education Program from 2003 in collaboration with music teachers in Chicago).

The Chicago Composers Project was born in 1999 . On one day and two days later in January they organize a jazz fair (with stalls, films, concerts).

His archive is at the University of Chicago. The institute is funded by donations and companies like Boeing are among the sponsors.

It was founded in 1969 by a group of musicians, club owners, jazz fans and jazz journalists: Art Hodes , Muhal Richard Abrams (one of the founders of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in Chicago (AACM)), Harriet Choice ( Chicago Tribune music critic), Joe Segal (Owner of The Jazz Showcase Club), Bob Koester (owner of Delmark Records ), Don DeMichael (drummer and editor of Down Beat , deceased in 1982, the archive is named after him), Penny Tyler (jazz promoter) and a few others. DeMichael and Tyler were also presidents at times. Richard Wang was the long-time director .

The institute has a partnership with Posen , which has hosted a four-day Made in Chicago Jazz Festival since 2005 .

Lauren Deutsch has been Executive Director since 1996.
