Jean-Baptiste Salomon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean-Baptiste Salomon , also known as Jean-Baptiste Deshaye (born August 1, 1713 in Reims , † 1767 in Paris ) was a French violin maker of the 18th century.

biography

Deshaye was born in Reims in 1713 as the son of a violin maker who was probably also his teacher.

In 1735 he married Catherine de Rodé, with whom he moved to Paris a short time later. Probably another family member - possibly a brother of his - was also a violin maker, since instruments with the trade name "Salomon", which Deshaye / Salomon had used, still existed until 1773.

In 1748 his wife died; he married Barbe Marguerite Deshaies, the widow of the violin maker Jean Ouvrard. Jean-Baptiste took over his workshop. The family included a son, Jean, from his first marriage (born 1738, died 1759) and nephew and niece of Jean Ouvrard, Marie and Georges Cousineau . Georges began an apprenticeship with the instrument maker Lejeune and was best known as a harp maker.

Barbe Marguerite died in 1752; Salomon did not remarry until 1765, and his third wife became Marie Cousineau.

In addition to violins, Salomon / Deshaye also produced violas, cellos, guitars and numerous other instruments such as B. Violen d'amore.
