Jean-Léonard Lugardon (born September 30, 1801 in Geneva ; † August 16, 1884 ibid) was a Swiss history, genre and portrait painter.

Live and act

Jean-Léonard Lugardon was born to watchmaker Albert Lugardon and Catherine Duboule. Lugardon began his training at the Société des Arts de Genève . From 1820 to 1822 he was a student of Antoine-Jean Gros in Paris and of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Florence . Lugardon worked in Italy from 1823 to 1825, then in Rome from 1826 to 1829.

In 1826 he married Suzanne Paschoud. In Rome, his wife gave birth to their son Albert, who later became a painter. She died at the second birth in 1830. Lugardon has participated in art exhibitions since 1823. In 1824 he was awarded the 1st prize for his history painting. From 1836 to 1843 he ran an art school in Geneva. From 1837 to 1842 he held the post of councilor.

Lugardon went on a study trip to Algeria in 1851 . He exhibited the works he created there at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855.

Alongside his friends Alexandre Calame , François Diday and Joseph Hornung, Jean-Léonard Lugardon was one of the representatives of the Geneva School of Romantic painting.
