Jean-Pierre Gontard (born September 14, 1941 in France ) is a French diplomat.

Life

Gontard was a professor at the University Institute for International Studies and Development (IHEID) at the University of Geneva . He was then an envoy from the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

In 2001 he mediated between FARC and the Colombian government in the armed conflict in Colombia . In the summer of 2008, Gontard's mediating role, who, according to emails intercepted by Colombian intelligence services, failed to keep any distance from the FARC, came under fire. The alleged ransom payment to the rebels for the release of abducted Swiss Novartis employees led to an investigation by the Colombian Ministry of Justice. He was suspected of participating in the delivery of the $ 500,000 ransom to the FARC in Costa Rica in 2001.

The allegations were denied in a film documentary by the western Swiss television TSR.
