Jean Babelon

Jean Babelon (born January 19, 1889 in Paris , † April 20, 1978 ibid) was a French numismatist .

Jean Babelon, son of the numismatist Ernest Babelon , studied at the École nationale des chartes and received his diploma as archivist in 1910 . From 1910 to 1913 he spent at the Institut des hautes études hispaniques in Madrid . He then began working at the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliothèque Nationale , which was under the direction of his father. From 1937 to 1961 he was director of the Cabinet des Médailles himself. His main research area was ancient numismatics.

His son is the archivist and historian Jean-Pierre Babelon.
