IC 2184 is a pair of colliding spiral galaxies in the constellation Giraffe in the northern sky , which is an estimated 166 million light years away from the Milky Way . The individual components have a diameter of about 45,000 or 40,000 light years, the total system of about 65,000 light years. We see the galaxies as an edge-on object , ie from the side. The system was previously classified as an irregular or special spiral galaxy .
The object was discovered on January 24, 1900 by Guillaume Bigourdan .
