Jean Badal

Jean Badal (actually János Badal ; born March 7, 1927 in Budapest ; † October 9, 2015 ) was an internationally known cameraman of Hungarian origin.

Life

Jean Badal joined the Soviet army in 1944, which conquered Hungary, but which Badal saw as a liberator from the perspective of those persecuted by the previous right-wing regime.

After 1945 he trained as a cameraman and became one of the most successful representatives of this profession in Hungary; Badal was responsible for the first color newsreel, which was shown in Hungary in 1953.

During the political repression after the failure of the Hungarian popular uprising , Badal left Hungary and settled in France .

He was responsible for the camera work on numerous well-known films, for example What's New, Pussy? of the director Clive Donner and Tati's wonderful times of the director Jacques Tati .
