Jean Darrouzès

Michel Jean Abel Darrouzès (born April 3, 1912 in Nassiet , Landes department , † June 12, 1990 in Montreuil ) was a French Byzantinist .

At the age of 16 he decided to pursue a spiritual career and began a novitiate with the Assumptionists . In 1947 he joined the Institut français d'études byzantines (maintained by the Assumptionists) in Bucharest, which was transferred to Paris that same year after the communist seizure of power. From 1953 to 1957 he worked in the Athens section of the institute , while otherwise he worked almost exclusively in Paris.

Jean Darrouzès was primarily a historian, but as the editor of numerous (often still unedited) writings, he was also a philologist. His stupendous literary production made him one of the leading Byzantinists of the 20th century.
