As a writer, Lorrain wrote various poems, short stories and novels in French; he was considered a scandal reporter of the Belle Époque and wrote, among other things, under the pseudonym Rétif de la Bretonne about the Parisian night world. Lorrain also wrote the libretto for the opera Éros vainqueur by Pierre de Bréville, which premiered in 1910 . Lorrain was known as a writer for his dandyism and lived openly gay in Paris.
