Jean Martinet (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Martinet (* 1937 ; † 1990 or 1991) was a French mathematician who dealt with dynamic systems , qualitative theory of differential equations and differential topology (singularity theory).

Life

Martinet received his habilitation (Doctorat d´Etat) ( Sur les singularités des formes différentielles ) in Grenoble in 1969 and then went to the University of Strasbourg as Maitre des conférences to his teacher Georges Reeb , where he received a full professorship after a stopover in Mühlhausen in 1976 (from 1989 Professeur de class exceptionelle).

He was also active in mathematics education and was temporarily head of the IREM (Institut de recherche sur l'enseignement des mathématiques) in Strasbourg.

In 1971 he proved that every closed, orientable 3-manifold has contact structures. Like the French mathematician Robert Lutz (in his dissertation in Strasbourg 1971), he proved more precisely that every plane field on closed, orientable 3-manifolds is homotopic to a contact structure
