The Jean Street Railway Bridge is a railway bridge in the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 2005 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

description

The stone arch bridge is located in Port Glasgow city center next to West Church and runs the railroad tracks west of Port Glasgow Railway Station on Jean Street . It was built in connection with the establishment of the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway , which opened in 1841, making it one of the older railway bridges in Scotland. The engineers Grainger and Miller were entrusted with the route planning. It is not clear whether they were also responsible for planning the bridges. The line began operating in 1841 and the bridge was likely completed the previous year.

The operating company attached great importance to stylistic details in its buildings and the terminal stations in Greenock and Glasgow , which had since been demolished, were among the architecturally most important station buildings in Scotland. Although the Jean Street Railway Bridge is relatively simple due to its small size, it still reflects the company's philosophy. The bridge spans Jean Street in an arch. It is made of sandstone , but has been repaired with brick in various places . The parapet protrudes slightly on the south side and was raised with brick.
