Jean de Garlande (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean de Garlande ( 13th century ) was a Parisian musician, author of several treatises on music theory and polyphony .

It is possible that Jean der Garlande is actually two different people, a Jean de Garlande who wrote the works De plana musica and De mensurabili musica around 1240 and who was probably not with Johannes de, who was teaching in Paris at the same time Garlandia is identifiable, and another who wrote an Introduction à la musique around 1300 . An introduction was ascribed to the latter, but it was actually an adaptation of a treatise by Philippe de Vitry .

Remarks

  1. “Although several scholars… have sought to identify him with the poet and grammarian Johannes de Garlandia (c1190-c1272), an Englishman also teaching in Paris, the important studies by Reimer and Rasch reject this idea” ( New Grove quoted from the norm data set of Library of Congress )
