Jeffrey Ching

Jeffrey Ching (born November 4, 1965 in Manila ) is a British composer of Chinese descent.

Life

Ching comes from a Buddhist Chinese family and was educated at a Catholic school in Manila. He began composing at the age of ten and his first opera was performed when he was seventeen. He then studied music and sonology at Harvard University , where he received two grants and the Harvard Detur Prize, and completed both studies summa cum laude. He then went to England and studied philosophy (Bachelor) at Cambridge University and philosophy and composition (Master) at the University of London . In 2004 he received British citizenship. He lives mostly in Berlin with his wife, the singer Andión Fernández .

In his early days, Ching composed over two hundred works in a wide variety of genres. In 1990, 1993 and 1997 he represented the Philippines China as a composer at concerts in Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen. In 1998 he was named one of the five outstanding citizens of the Philippines by the Philippine President. This year, on the 100th anniversary of the Philippines' independence, he created his 3rd Symphony Rituals , in which he combined elements of different cultures for the first time - Balinese gamelan music, Chinese Ming music and Spanish Renaissance music .

In addition to works for solo instruments, chamber and orchestral music, two stage works were also created in the following years: the opera Das Waisenkind for the Erfurt Theater (2009) and the musical legend Before Branant for the Hong Kong Art Festival (2014). In 2012, Ching's Concerto da camera with the Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra and Horologia sinica , a commission from the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra , were premiered.
