Jens Lütkenherm

Jens Lütkenherm (born March 29, 1961 in Düsseldorf ) is a German diplomat . He has been ambassador to Laos since August 2017 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Jens Lütkenherm studied history, politics and German studies in Mainz and Heidelberg from 1980 to 1987 and journalism in Mainz from 1987/88.

His hobbies include swimming, reading and soccer.

Lütkenherm is married and has 3 children.

career

In 1988 Lütkenherm joined the Foreign Service and completed his training as a senior foreign service at the Diplomatic Academy in Bonn by 1990. From 1990 to 1991 he worked in the Federal Ministry of Defense in the department for global and nuclear disarmament.

From 1991 to 1994 his first assignment abroad took him to the Consulate General in San Francisco in the USA, where he worked as First Secretary for Culture, Protocol, Legal and Consular Affairs.

From 1995 to 1996 Lütkenherm worked as personal advisor to Karsten Voigt, Member of the Bundestag and President of the North Atlantic Assembly (NATO Parliamentary Assembly) and in 1997 switched to the arms export control department at the Foreign Office.

In 1998 Lütkenherm became Deputy Head of the Ramallah Representative Office for the Palestinian Territories. He stayed there until 2002, then moved back to the Foreign Office in Berlin, where he worked in various departments until 2007.

From 2007 to 2010 Lütkenherm was head of the cultural department at the Warsaw embassy, ​​then returned to Berlin as the head of the department for international conferences at the Foreign Office and in 2012 became head of the department for conventional arms control and confidence and security-building measures in Europe.

In 2014 Lütkenherm was transferred to the embassy in Santiago de Chile as permanent representative and policy officer. During his service there, Federal President Joachim Gauck paid a visit, which caused a stir in the media.

In August 2017, Lütkenherm was appointed ambassador to Laos , based in Vientiane .
