Lake Yerevan ( Armenian Երևանյան լիճ ) is a reservoir in the west of the Armenian capital Yerevan , which was completed in 1970. It is located in the neighborhood Koghb in Yerevan city district Shengavit .
The lake has a surface of 95 hectares with a maximum depth of 18 meters. There are fish such as carp in the lake .
On the north bank of Lake Yerevan is the US Embassy , which was built there from June 2002 to May 2005 and was the world's largest US embassy in terms of land area; the south bank borders the main road M5 .
Trolleybus accident
On September 16, 1976, a trolleybus with 92 passengers on board drove into the lake and sank around 25 meters from the shore to a depth of 10 meters. Sharwasch Karapetjan , who happened to pass by during training at the time, was 22 and a multiple world champion in fin swimming , immediately jumped into the lake. With almost no view, he stepped into the back window of the bus and saved 20 passengers whom he dragged into the air.
