Jesús Guridi Bidaola (born September 25, 1886 in Vitoria-Gasteiz , Álava province , † April 7, 1961 in Madrid ) was a Basque - Spanish composer . His most important compositions include the zarzuela "El Caserío", the symphonic work "Diez melodías vascas" and the opera "Amaya".

Guridi was born in Vitoria into a family of musicians. His mother María de Trinidad Bidaola played the violin and his father Lorenzo was a pianist. He received his first lessons from the Escolapios brothers and Jesuits in Zaragoza . He received further musical training in Madrid and Bilbao . At the age of 18 he attended the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where one of his teachers was Vincent d'Indy . Further stations of his apprenticeship were Brussels and, following a recommendation by Resurrección María de Azkue , Cologne, with Otto Neitzel .

Guridi married in 1922 and had six children. From 1940 he worked for the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and eventually became its director.

Influenced by Wagner and the late Romanticists, Guridi drew essential parts of his inspiration from Basque folklore. His wide-ranging oeuvre includes chamber music as well as choral and symphonic works. Not to be forgotten is his work as an organist and composer for organ. Inspired by the many Cavaille-Coll organs in the Basque Country, he wrote a great deal of organ literature.
