Jesse Schell (born June 13, 1970 ) is an American developer of video games, author and managing director of Schell Games . Schell also works as a professor for entertainment technology at the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) of the US Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), a joint master’s course between the College of Fine Arts and School of Computer Science in Pittsburgh .

Career

In 1994, Jesse Schell received the degree as a Master of Science in the fields of computer networking ( computer networks ) and virtual reality ( virtual reality ) to the Information Networking Institute at CMU and then worked for a year at the Bell Labs . Schell continued his career at Walt Disney Imagineering in 1995. There he worked for seven years on various projects as a programmer, manager, designer and creative director. This included rides in amusement parks (such as Disney Quest) and the first massively multiplayer online game for children - Toontown Online. During his time at Disney Schell met the college professor Randy Pausch know. He taught the master's degree in entertainment technology at the CMU and founded the ETC there. In 2002 he retired for health reasons and asked Schell to take over his chair.

At the same time, Jesse Schell founded Schell Games as a company for the design and development of computer games, especially in the area of ​​so-called "transformational games". The company is based in Pittsburgh with Jesse Schell as managing director and employs over 100 people (as of September 2014).

In 2008, Jesse Schell published his first book called The Art of Game Design . This deals with the design methods for computer games developed by Schell during his time at the ETC. A German translation has been available since 2012 under the title "The Art of Game Design: Conceiving and Developing Better Games".

Schell continues to teach courses under the aspect of creating virtual worlds at the ETC.
