Church and Jesuit College in Uherské Hradiště

The Jesuit College in Uherské Hradiště ( German Hungarian Hradisch , Hungarian Magyarhradis ) in the Czech Republic was established in the 17th century. The former college of the Jesuits is a protected cultural monument. Today it serves as a cultural center with exhibitions, event rooms, summer cinema and various shops.

history

In 1643/44 the Jesuits came to Uherské Hradiště from Kroměříž, which was completely destroyed by the Swedish general Lennart Torstensson . In 1654 the foundation stone for the college building was laid. The Jesuit college burned down in the great city fire of 1681. As soon as the worst damage was repaired, the buildings were damaged by a powder explosion in the nearby red tower in 1695. In 1705 the college roof was renewed, and a hospital was set up in the following year. In 1729 the grammar school and the theater were ceremoniously opened. Construction work was completed in 1737.

In 1773, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Jesuit order in the Habsburg monarchy . The college building was used for housing and urban purposes. From 1919 to 1945 it served as barracks , first for the Czech and from 1939 for the German army ( Memel barracks ).

Building description

Portal to the redoubts

The building complex dominates Masaryk Square in the old town of Uherské Hradiště. To the left and right of the Franz-Xaver-Kirche are two three-wing, two-story buildings with large rectangular courtyards. In the wing to the east of the church facade are the so-called Redouten with the former Jesuit theater hall.

The Jesuit gardens to the south-west were bought by the city government in 1862, which set up the German-speaking grammar school there. The commercial academy ( obchodní akademie ) has been located there since 1918 .
