Jiang Hu

The fictional world of Jiang Hu (江湖) is the setting in which many of the wuxia stories take place. Literally translated, Jiang Hu means "rivers and lakes" and referred to any wild and uninhabited region. In medieval China , outsiders and outcasts often fled to the settlement borders.

The term Jiang Hu goes back to the novel The Robbers of Liang Shan Bog (an) by Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong from the 12th century, in which a band of outlaws retreats into hiding in a swamp and from there wages a guerrilla war against corrupt officials.

Today the term Jiang Hu denotes the world of secret societies and triads . In particular, it refers to all those who live according to the Triad's code of honor. Films like Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone (2000) with Tony Leung Kar Fai and Anthony Wong Chau-Sang or Jiang Hu (2004) with Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung describe precisely this world.
