Jim (also JIM ) was a comic book series by Jim Woodring , which the artist himself described as an "auto journal".

The comics included covered a variety of subjects , often based on dreams. But they also illustrated Woodring's hallucinations, his experiences with alcoholism , experiences from his childhood and Hindu ideas. Also found in Jim surrealist paintings and drawings and so-called Free-form -texts in the style of automatic writing . The style and artistic form of the series were groundbreaking for the underground comics scene of the time.

Jim started as a fanzine in 1980 until the series was published as a regular series by Fantagraphics Books in 1986 , initially four issues, then six more in Jim volume 2 . Most of these booklets are now out of print, but a partial collection was released in 1993 with the title The Book of Jim . The Book of Jim was nominated for an Ignatz Award for Reprint Collection / TPB in 1993 and for a Harvey Award for Best Graphic Album of Previously Released Material in 1994.

The character Frank and all the other characters in the Frank universe, who would later get their own series , also appeared in Jim for the first time and soon regularly .

Other characters from Jim include Jim Woodring himself (both male and female) and his family; Pulque , a Mexican-speaking, colorful and alcoholic monster who has adventures with a gang of teenagers and Big Red , a brutal and cynical cat who always defends his territory.

“It was fun to draw these Jim stories because of the laid back style, but I was tired of drawing myself. I never want to draw myself again. "
