Life

Allister studied law at Queen's University Belfast and practiced as a lawyer after graduating. From 2004 to 2009 Allister was a member of the European Parliament, succeeding Ian Paisley , who had been chairman of the Democratic Unionist Party for decades . There he was a member of the Fisheries Committee , the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. In protest against the cooperation between the DUP and Sinn Féin implemented by Paisley in accordance with the St Andrews Agreement (2006) , which led to the restoration of the Northern Irish government according to the principles of the Good Friday Agreement (1998), which the DUP had rejected at the time , Allister founded the Traditional party Unionist Voice . He lost his re-election to the European Parliament in 2009, as well as the 2010 election to the House of Commons in the constituency of North Antrim, which was won by the DUP. Since October 2011 he has been the only MP of his party in the Northern Ireland Assembly and takes one of the six (since 2017 five) seats for North Antrim. He is married to Ruth Allister and has three children.
