Jiulong yak

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jiulong yak is a breed of domestic yak . Since the targeted breeding of the yak is not yet very advanced, yak breeds generally have less breed-typical characteristics than was the case, for example, with European land cattle breeds in the middle of the 19th century. Therefore, phenotypic differences in the house yak are mainly due to the geographical separation of widely spaced locations.

The Jiulong yak is bred in the mountains of the central Chinese province of Sichuan . These are particularly large-framed animals with an above-average constitution. The breed is said to have emerged from domestic yaks who survived a cow plague epidemic in the mid-19th century. Compared to other yak races such as the Gannan yak or the Qinghai yak , selection measures have been taking place a little longer. Not only high-performing bulls are selected for breeding, but also yak cows with high milk yield. A quarter of all Jiulong yaks have a purely black coat color. The rest are black and white. A breeding station has existed in Jiulong since 1980 , which is intended to further improve the performance level of this geographic breed.
