The school teacher Joachim Loughrey began his political career with unsuccessful candidacies in 1976, February 1982, November 1982, 1987 and 1989 for a seat in the Dáil Éireann as a representative of the constituency "Donegal North East".
After his defeat in 1982, Loughrey was elected to the 16th Seanad Éireann. He was re-elected in 1983 and 1987, but lost his seat in the 1989 elections. He ran again in 1993 unsuccessfully for election.
