The Society for Nature Conservation and Ornithology e. V. (GNOR) is a nature conservation organization in Rhineland-Palatinate . The GNOR was founded in 1977 in Bad Münster am Stein and has been a non-profit association since then, dedicated to nature conservation in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The nature conservation work is based on the requirements of nature conservation and landscape management within the framework of the Federal Nature Conservation Act and the State Nature Conservation Act of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Mission statement and focus of work

The GNOR is a nature conservation association whose members collect and evaluate knowledge about the diversity of animals and plants in Rhineland-Palatinate. On this basis, nature conservation projects are actively initiated, the nature conservation agenda of the country is co-determined and knowledge is imparted in order to promote nature awareness. With their activities, the members of the GNOR want to work in cooperation with universities, associations, museums and institutions with similar objectives

  • Sustainably protect and promote the animal and plant species and their habitats in Rhineland-Palatinate,
  • the distribution and population development of the flora and fauna of Rhineland-Palatinate

document,

  • work on the establishment of national nature conservation goals,
  • publish their knowledge and the resulting knowledge and
  • Raise awareness that nature conservation is part of our society.

The main focus of the GNOR is in the voluntary working groups. For example, there are working groups on the topic:

In addition, there are regional working groups that are dedicated to nature conservation tasks in certain regions, such as:

ProNATUR Foundation

In 2006 the GNOR set up a proNATUR Rhineland-Palatinate foundation, initially endowed with 750,000 euros . Its statutory purposes are the preservation and research of the diverse nature in Rhineland-Palatinate, in particular through:

  • Publication of scientific work and information about the occurrence and way of life of fauna and flora in Rhineland-Palatinate
  • Purchase, lease and sustainable maintenance and development of land
  • Environmental education
  • Nature research

Offices and facilities

The GNOR maintains a regional office in Mainz and a southern office in Kaiserslautern . A previously operated North branch had to be given up.

NaturErlebnisZentrum Wappenschmiede

Events

The GNOR organizes its own events on the subject of nature conservation and landscape management. Specialist speakers provide information on current topics in nature conservation. Specialist conferences are just as much a part of the program as excursions on faunistic and floristic topics. All events are compiled in a separate event calendar and regularly presented on the club's own website.

Publications

scientific publications

  • The association's own magazine Fauna und Flora in Rheinland-Pfalz publishes articles with floristic and faunistic content - the reference area is the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate including the neighboring regions. In the supplement series, booklets with thematic focus and an annual ornithological report appear.
  • Monographs on individual groups of animals and plants are published at irregular intervals . Examples are the fauna and flora supplements The butterflies of the Palatinate , the jewel beetles in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland and the self-published book Die Fledermäuse der Pfalz .
  • In early 2015, the first volume of the four-volume work Die Vogelwelt von Rheinland-Pfalz Avifauna (Dietzen, C. et al. 2015) was published.

To inform the GNOR members, the GNOR circular has been published since 1977 and the GNOR Info since 1993, in which activities, background reports, new publications, events and reports from the working groups are published.
