Joachim Neubüser

Joachim Neubüser (born June 18, 1932 in Belgard , Pomerania ) is a German mathematician who deals with group theory and was a professor at RWTH Aachen University .

Neubüser studied from 1951 at the University of Kiel with the state examination in 1957 and the doctorate with Wolfgang Gaschütz in 1957 (About homogeneous groups). As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Manchester in 1957/58 and from 1958 assistant in Kiel, was after his habilitation in 1967 (the sub-group associations of the groups of order <= 100 with the exception of orders 64 and 96) scientific advice in Kiel and from 1969 full professor at RWTH Aachen University (chair D). In 1997 he retired.

He is particularly concerned with algorithmic group theory and has been developing programs for this since the 1960s. In 1986 he initiated the computer algebra system GAP with algorithms for group theory and previously in 1981 the CAS system (Character Algorithm System) for calculations with group characters.

He also dealt with space groups . With Hans Zassenhaus and others, he classified crystallographic groups in four dimensions.

His doctoral students include Wilhelm Plesken , Rolf Bülow and Volkmar Felsch.
