Joachim Schmidt (Manager)

Joachim Schmidt (born September 7, 1948 in Sindelfingen ) is a German manager and football functional . From 2009 to 2013, as before, from 1999 to 2005 he was Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars . In addition, Joachim Schmidt was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of VfB Stuttgart from 2013 to 2015 . Before that, he had been the deputy of his predecessor Dieter Hundt on the VfB supervisory board since 2002 .

Joachim Schmidt studied mathematics at the University of Stuttgart . In 1976 he received his doctorate on the subject of almost disintegrating sequences for lattices over orders .

Mercedes Benz

In 1979 Joachim Schmidt became main group leader in car development at Daimler-Benz . In 1999 he became head of sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars . In 2005 he ended this activity for the time being. After working for Mercedes as sales manager in the regions Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe in the meantime, Joachim Schmidt again took over the position of sales and marketing manager at Mercedes-Benz Cars in 2009. In March 2012, Schmidt extended his contract with Daimler AG until September 2015. In September 2013, Daimler announced that Schmidt would resign from his position on October 1, 2013 when he reached the age of 65.

VfB Stuttgart

In 2002 Joachim Schmidt was elected to the supervisory board of VfB Stuttgart . There he became deputy chairman Dieter Hundt . After Daimler AG had already participated as a sponsor in the renovation of the Mercedes-Benz Arena , Joachim Schmidt placed the Mercedes-Benz Bank as the new main sponsor for VfB Stuttgart in 2012 . However, he came under public criticism afterwards because it became known that he and Dieter Hundt had previously prevented a more lucrative sponsorship deal with Porsche . After the previous chairman of the supervisory board, Hundt, left the supervisory board, Dr. Joachim Schmidt was unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board on June 18, 2013. On October 13, 2015, Schmidt resigned as a member of the Supervisory Board with immediate effect after the actions of the Supervisory Board he headed had previously been refused at the general meeting for the 2014 financial year.
