Joannes Zacheus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joannes Zacheus (active between 1554 and 1569) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance .

life and work

So far, music historians have not been able to determine the year and place of birth or the year and place of death of Joannes Zacheus; also where he lived and worked is not known. Its identity can only be derived from two four-part Dutch songs that the publisher Jacob Baethen published in his anthology Dat ierste boeck van den nieuwe Duijtsche liedekens (The first book of new Dutch songs) in Maastricht in 1554. These songs have the following text beginnings:

  • "Ic en can mij niet bedwingen"
  • "Mijns liefkens bruijn ooghen"

In a later publication by Pierre Phalese , Leuven 1572, the first of these two songs is attributed to Jan Belle , while the second is considered to be another setting of Carolus Souliaert's song with the same text.

meaning

Due to his lifetime and the style of his compositions, Joannes Zacheus belongs to the 4th generation of Franco-Flemish music.
