Jan Belle (active from around 1545 to 1566) was a Franco-Flemish composer , choirmaster and music theorist of the Renaissance .

Live and act

Jan Belle's birth and death dates could not yet be determined. He only appears through his musical and professional activity with receipts. This begins with his work as a master of the choirboys ( magister duodenarum ) at the Church of the Holy Cross (Sainte Croix) in Liège in 1546 and 1547; here he was called "de Lovanio". In 1552 the Maastricht publisher Jacob Baethen published what was probably Jan Belle's first musical work, Musices encomion , a music-theoretical treatise. This work has not survived. Between 1563 and 1566 the composer was possibly active as a succentor at the Church of Our Lady in St. Truiden . In 1572 the Antwerp music publisher Pierre Phalèse the Elder brought out a collection of Dutch songs entitled Duijtsch musijk boeck , which contained six four-part songs in Flemish texts by Jan Belle .

meaning

Due to his lifetime and his musical style, Jan Belle belongs to the 5th generation of Franco-Flemish music. Only a few works by him have survived.
