Pierre Phalèse

Pierre Phalèse also Pierre van der Phaliesen , Latinized Petrus Phalesius (* around 1510 in Leuven , † around 1573 there ), was a Flemish music publisher and engraver . He lived in the temporal transition between the Burgundian Netherlands and the Spanish Netherlands . He has published numerous works for the lute , among other things .

Life

The son of the brewer Augustin van der Phaliesen founded a university bookshop in Löwen in 1541. In 1552 he was given the privilege of printing sheet music, which was the hour of birth of the music publisher . From 1572 he worked with Jean Bellère (also Jan Bellerus) in Antwerp and published mainly masses , motets and magnificate as well as French, Dutch and Italian songs. He presented pieces a. a. by Cyprian de Rore , Orlando di Lasso and Clemens non Papa . In addition, he published in Löwen Selectissima […] In Guiterna Ludenda Carmina a book on learning to play the four-course guitar for amateurs, as well as the Hortus Cytharae collection for Cister . Its collections also contain pieces by anonymous composers.

His son, Pierre Phalèse the Younger (1550–1629), moved the business to Antwerp in 1581, and Madleine Phalèse (1586–1652), the daughter of Phalèse the Younger, ran the business until her death in 1669.
