Joaquín Costa Martínez (born September 14, 1846 in Monzón , † February 8, 1911 in Graus ) was a Spanish politician, lawyer, economist and historian.

life and work

Costa studied in Huesca, Paris and Madrid. Subsequently, Costa taught at the University of Madrid , but gave up his position in protest against the state education policy. Between 1877 and 1879 he worked as a lawyer in Cuenca and Huesca before he returned to Madrid, where he worked on various magazines and took part in political and economic congresses. From 1892 he was increasingly active in politics, but was weakened by a progressive muscle atrophy . In 1902 he was elected as a Republican MP.

Costa is part of the Generación del 98 and the intellectual stream of Regeneracionismo . In particular, his writings on economic and agricultural policy had a lasting effect.

On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of his death in February 2011, many cultural events took place. The Spanish National Library organized an exhibition on Costa that same year.
