Jocelerme Privert

Jocelerme Privert (born February 1, 1953 in Petit-Trou-de-Nippes ) is a Haitian politician .

Life

Jocelerme Privert was Finance and Economics Minister under President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 and 2004 he was Minister of the Interior. After Aristide's escape on February 29, 2004, Privert was arrested in April 2004 and spent 26 months in prison. In 2008 he was elected to the Senate of Haiti, of which he became President in January 2016.

From February 14, 2016 to June 14, 2016, Privert succeeded Michel Martelly as the interim president elected by parliament. He should lead the official business until the election of a regular president. This goal of handing over office to a successor elected by the people was not achieved during his mandate, which was limited to 120 days. Two attempts by the remaining members of the Chamber of Deputies to decide whether to renew Privert's mandate as transitional president until February 7, 2017, failed. Because violent demonstrators for and against Privert prevented the meetings scheduled on June 21 and June 28, 2016 from taking place. Nonetheless, Privert regards himself as a “de facto transitional president” for the time being, unless the Chamber of Deputies decreed otherwise.

Jocelerme Privert is married to Ginette Michaud.
