Le Nouvelliste is a French-language daily newspaper printed in Haiti and distributed across the country, particularly in the capital and major cities. Her editor-in-chief Frantz Duval assigns her political orientation to the center-right.

It is the largest and oldest newspaper in Haiti and also the oldest French-language newspaper on the American continent. At the same time, it is the only daily newspaper currently printed in Haiti because its competitor Le Matin is printed in the Dominican Republic .

history

The newspaper was founded on May 2nd, 1898 by Guillaume Chéraquit under the name Le Matin and 15 months later renamed Le Nouvelliste . Chéraquit commissioned his friend Henri Chauvet, who also became editor-in-chief in 1899, with the printing. In 1909 Henri Chauvet bought the Nouvelliste . His son Ernest Georges Chauvet shaped the newspaper as publisher and editor-in-chief from 1919 until he was appointed Haitian ambassador to London in 1937. Ernest Georges Chauvet established the legendary reputation of the Nouvelliste in Haiti . He was followed as a publisher by his son Max Chauvet senior, his widow Jeanine Théard Chauvet and his grandson Max E. Chauvet (Max Chauvet jun.).

The Haiti earthquake in January 2010 caused severe damage to the buildings of Le Nouvelliste and the newspaper only published the information on its website, as the damage made it impossible to print the editions. On April 6, 2010, the publication of the printed edition was resumed. The seat was moved from the city center of the capital to Pétionville and the original number of 24 editors was reduced to half.

Before the earthquake, the circulation was 15,000 copies. Many readers (and some authors) of the Nouvelliste were killed in the earthquake . After its reappearance in April 2010, the newspaper was unable to meet the pre-earthquake requirements. In 2011 the circulation was 9,000 copies.
