Jochen Neuendorff (born November 16, 1961 in Düsseldorf ) is a German agricultural scientist . His research focus is the quality infrastructure for agricultural products and for food and feed.

Career

Neuendorff was born in Düsseldorf in 1961. After graduating from high school in 1979, he studied agriculture in Giessen and Göttingen. During his doctorate at the University of Kassel, he dealt with the nitrogen fixation performance of white clover on intensive free-standing willows. He also worked on the production technology of organically managed permanent grassland, in particular issues relating to the nitrogen cycle.

In 1989, while he was still working at the University of Kassel, he founded the organic inspection body GfRS Gesellschaft für Ressourcenschutz., A certification body that has been operating in Germany, Luxembourg and Austria and has been in charge since then. The GfRS is not active in countries outside the European Union. In addition to the further development of the certification of organic products, Neuendorff also dealt with the development of sustainability standards for regionality (regional window) and for climate protection ( Stop Climate Change ). In 2007 he co-founded the “Anti-Fraud Initiative” (AFI), which has since dealt with international fraud prevention in the growing organic market

Neuendorff works internationally as an expert for quality infrastructure (QI) , u. a. as an appraiser for various accreditation bodies and as an expert for various development cooperation organizations such as giz and PTB to support the establishment of local QI structures in developing countries.

Since 2001, Neuendorff has also headed research and development projects for the further development of control and certification systems.

Research priorities

The overarching theme of the projects for which Neuendorff is responsible is how tests of sustainability standards must be further developed in order to ensure a high level of consumer protection.

The first project of a weak point analysis of the EU Organic Regulation, funded by the BÖLN , developed new risk-based control methods such as cross-stage traceability tests ("Cross Checks"), which are now legally anchored in organic certification in Germany. The EU project "Improved Risk Management Tools for Organic Inspectors (IRM-Organic)" focused on improving the international competence of organic inspectors on risk-based control methods. The internet-based certificate database www.bioc.info created a transparency instrument with which certificate forgery can be avoided and the certification status of companies and companies in the organic food industry can be checked in real time.

The project results of the various projects are summarized on the project page at GfRS.

Neuendorff's current topic is the animal welfare of organic animals and the design of corresponding test concepts. This research question was dealt with in two German projects and an EU project, "Organic Inspectors Training for Animal Welfare (AWARE)". A German-language e-learning program on the animal welfare of organic animals was developed. In addition, he and a team of experts deal with contaminants and residues in organic products. For this purpose, the GfRS runs the Internet database resi.bio together with the control association.

Neuendorff was also involved in the conception of an e-learning course for the new EU organic regulation 2018/848, which is to come into force on January 1, 2021.
