The regional window is a voluntary food label to advertise regional food in Germany (regional label). It was officially presented by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture in January 2014 . However, it is not a state, but a private label sponsored by the Regionalfenster eV association

Elements and specifications

Certain criteria apply to labeling with a regional window:

  • The name of the region must be clearly stated, for example the district, the state or a radius in kilometers. The region must be smaller than the Federal Republic of Germany, but it can cross national or state borders in natural areas. At least part of the defined region must be in the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • The first main ingredient and the valuable ingredients must come entirely (100 percent) from the specified region and make up at least 51 percent of the total weight of the product. If the proportion of the main ingredient is less than 51 percent, the other ingredients must also come 100 percent from the region until at least 51 percent of the total weight is reached.
  • The place of processing must be stated in the regional window.

In a scientifically supported test from January to April 2013, around 150 foods in 20 test markets in Germany were labeled with the regional window. A subsequent survey among consumers showed that 80 percent rated the label positively and would welcome its introduction.

In January 2014, the then Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hans-Peter Friedrich, presented the regional window at the International Green Week in Berlin.

According to official figures, over 4,200 products were labeled with the regional window in autumn 2018.
