Joel is a Biblical person mentioned in the book of Samuel as a family member of the prophet Samuel .

etymology

The name יֹואֵל jô'êl , German 'Joel' 1 Sam 8,2  EU is a name made up of two elements. It consists of the name of Godיהוה jhwh , German 'JHWH' and the wordאֵל 'êl , German ' God ' . Put together, the name means “ YHWH is God”.

The Greek form of the name is Ιωηλ Iōēl ( 1 Sam 8,2  LXX ), the Latin Iohel ( 1 Sam 8,2  VUL ).

Mentions in the Bible

Samuel as an old man (St Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and Art, Glasgow)

In 1 Sam 8,2  EU Joel is introduced. He is the firstborn son of the prophet Samuel and is appointed by him alongside his younger brother Abijah as one of the judges over Israel when Samuel is old. The seat of the two judges is Beersheba . However, Joel and Abija use their position for their own gain by accepting bribes and bowing the law ( 1 Sam 8,3  EU ). As a result, the elders of Israel ask Samuel to appoint a king over them ( 1 Sam 8,5  EU ), which ultimately leads to Saul's rise to king over Israel .

Furthermore, Joel is mentioned in 1 Chr 6,13  EU in the family tree of the Levites as the son of Samuel and brother Abijas and in 1 Chr 6,18  EU as the father of the temple singer " Heman the singer ". It is noticeable, however, that at the point 1 Chr 6.13  EU in the BHS וַשְׁנִי wašnî , German 'Waschni' , in the Septuagint Σανι Sani and in the Vulgate ( 1 Chr 6,28  VUL ) Vasseni is named as the firstborn of Samuel. However, the Luther Bible in the revision of 2017 also gives the name with Joel ; the Zurich Bible in the revision of 2007 does not mention the name of the firstborn. The 2006 revision of the Elberfeld Bible is translated by Joel , but points out the problem of textual criticism.
