Johan Gustaf Hjalmar Kinberg

Johan Gustaf Hjalmar Kinberg , called Hjalmar, (born May 13, 1820 in Grönby församling , Skåne , † August 29, 1908 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish veterinarian and zoologist.

Kinberg studied medicine in Lund from 1838 with a master’s degree in 1844 and a doctorate in 1850. He then worked, among other things, as a military doctor for the Danish army in Schleswig (1850) and from 1851 to 1853 as a ship’s doctor and zoologist for the circumnavigation of the frigate Eugenie (under the Captain Christian Adolf Virgin (1797–1870), who was also a diplomat and later rear admiral) participated and wrote zoological contributions to the expedition report on Annelids (Annulata, 2 booklets 1857/58). From 1853 to 1856 he was prosector and adjunct for anatomy at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In addition, he taught at the Veterinary Institute, from 1859 to 1888 as a professor. From 1856 to 1862 and from 1872 to 1886 he was its director.

As a zoologist, he dealt primarily with annelids (annelids), of which he numerous genera and families first described scientifically . For contributions to archaeological zoology , he received the gold medal of the Swedish Academy of History and Antiquities in 1871.

In 1860 he was one of the founders and first chairman of the Swedish Association of Veterinary Medicine and he co-edited two journals for veterinary medicine: from 1861 to 1863 with Fredriik Lundberg the Tidskrift för veterinärer, hästvänner och landthushållare and from 1875 to 1882 the Tidskrift för veterinärer och landthushållare .

He was also a great collector of books, coins, and medals. Some marine organisms are named after him, such as Ophiura kinbergi , Amphiura kinbergi .

He worked on the Swedish edition of the textbook of zoology by Henri Milne-Edwards with (1860) and on Svenska foglarne (Swedish birds, volumes 2 to 4, 1883 to 1886) by Carl Jacob Sundevall (1801-1875).
